Traumatic Brain Injury Fellowship Program
The University of Kentucky Brain Injury Fellowship Program aims to provide a comprehensive one-year fellowship curriculum in brain injury medicine that addresses the prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and management of persons with brain injury, including medical, physical, psychosocial, and vocational disabilities and complications in each patient. Our mission is to train our fellows to provide comprehensive care in brain injury medicine and rehabilitation care to the citizens of the Commonwealth of Kentucky - for the Bluegrass Region and beyond. The fellow will learn the facets of both inpatient and outpatient brain injury physiatry across the spectrum of brain injury severity. The program will support each fellow with mentorship, didactic programs, clinical rotations, and subspecialty exposure to provide individualized education for personal goal achievement as well. The program will prepare the fellow for success in the American Board of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (ABPMR) Brain Injury Medicine (BIM) subspecialty examination. The fellow additionally will be provided with ample procedural exposure for spasticity management and beyond. The fellow will be encouraged to participate in national organizations as well.
The program will work in close collaboration with the University of Kentucky Graduate Medical Education (GME) office as well as its College of Medicine Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Department to promote efforts to achieve diversity in trainee recruitment, selection, and retention. The fellow will have the opportunity to sit on the Diversity and Inclusion committee within the Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation Department. Faculty and residents have annual unconscious bias training as well. Regarding recruitment, we will promote the inclusion of both United States and international medical graduates by not only reviewing applications from both groups but by making the extra steps for international medical graduates easier through directions and helpful links on our website. Similar to our residency online recruitment efforts through COVID-19, our fellowship program will utilize virtual platforms when able to additionally showcase our program to candidates outside our local region.
