Biography and Education

Education

Dr. Schleenbaker received a B.S. in psychology (chemistry minor) from Columbia Union College (Takoma Park, Maryland) and an M.D. from Loma Linda (California) School of Medicine. He completed an internship in internal medicine and a residency in physical medicine and rehabilitation at Nassau County Medical Center through the State University of New York at Stony Brook. He is board-certified in physical medicine and rehabilitation. Schleenbaker joined the UK faculty in July 1990 and was promoted to Associate Professor in 1996.

CLINICAL

Dr. Schleenbaker is chief of physical medicine and rehabilitation services at the Lexington Veterans Affairs facilities, which include an acute care facility adjacent to the UK Chandler Medical Center and a long-term care facility which houses a 12-bed subacute rehabilitation unit. He conducts outpatient clinics at the VAMC and at UK, including multidisciplinary outpatient neuroscience clinics. He also conducts consultations at UK. Previous service includes direction of an inpatient stroke unit at Cardinal Hill Rehabilitation Hospital and a clinic for balance and equilibrium disorders.

RESEARCH

Dr. Schleenbaker has authored articles on subacute rehabilitation, stroke, restraint use, toxic encephalopathy, and computed tomography. As a research mentor, he has guided many residents to publication on various topics, including stroke, neuropathies, reflex sympathetic dystrophy, use of restraints in a rehabilitation setting, and near falls. He is a member of the department's research committee.
